Activity Highlights:

Dramatically pick up the pace on your paddleboarding learning journey with our Thames Skills and Knowledge (TSK) & Coach Training. It’s specifically designed for those who wish to confidently and safely navigate the tidal Thames. This comprehensive training provides you with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to independently stand-up paddleboard (SUP) in one of the world’s most unique tidal environments.

An Exciting Challenge

The Tidal Thames, also known as the Thames Tideway, is a stretch of river with strong currents, varied weather conditions, and bustling river traffic. Navigating its waters requires unique skills and knowledge. This is where our TSK and Coach Training course steps in.

It has been carefully crafted in cooperation with the Port of London Authority (PLA) to ensure your SUP experience on the Tideway is safe, informative and exhilarating.

Course Structure

Our TSK course comprises two sections: the TSK 1 Theory and the TSK 1 Practical.

You can choose to book these sections separately or together, depending on your needs and convenience, just select the option from the dropdown in the booking form. We recommend booking together.

Please note that this course isn’t run regularly, so we ask that you submit a request indicating your interest. You can choose a preferred date to indicate when you would like to partake. We’ll then notify you as soon as the next dates are available. You will not be charged or committed by submitting a booking request.

Part One: TSK 1 Theory (Online)

Delivered in three interactive Zoom sessions totaling around 4-hours, the TSK 1 Theory section covers the following:

  • An understanding of the Thames tides and weather interactions
  • Navigation rules on the Tidal Thames
  • Identifying specific river hazards and risk avoidance strategies
  • Trip preparation and planning
  • Essential safety equipment and SUP skills for river paddling
  • Detailed discussion of PLA’s Code of Practice for Paddling on the Tideway

Part Two: TSK 2 Practical

The TSK 1 Practical section allows you to apply the knowledge gained from the online sessions. Under the guidance of an experienced coach, you’ll navigate the Tideway in real-time, ensuring that you fully understand and can apply the navigation rules and positioning techniques.

Key Features

  • Small group sizes for personalised attention
  • Opportunity to ask questions and clarify doubts
  • Hands-on experience with different SUP equipment
  • Equipment is provided but you can use your own by arrangement

What’s Next?

Once you have successfully completed the TSK 1 training, you’ll be eligible to join our TSK 1 Trips. These are longer journeys for TSK 1 trained paddlers only, allowing you to explore sections of the river from Putney Bridge up to Chelsea Bridge.

With the Thames Skills & Knowledge and Coach Training, you’ll not only enhance your SUP skills but also gain a deeper appreciation of the Tideway’s unique characteristics.

So, why wait? Submit your booking request today and start your journey towards becoming a confident and knowledgeable Thames Tideway SUP paddler.
