Activity Highlights:

Explore the heart of London by hiring our sit-on-top kayaks from Paddington Basin. This unique offering is the perfect opportunity for all adventure seekers looking to explore the enchanting waterways of London. With no prior experience needed, these stable kayaks are designed to make your journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Our kayak rental invites you to set your own pace and direction. You have the freedom to paddle independently along the Grand Union Canal, unveiling the charm of iconic places like Little Venice. Why not pack a picnic or plan an afternoon tea stop at a nearby café?

A sit-on-top kayak is a user-friendly type of kayak, ideal for all levels. It has an open deck, rather than a traditional enclosed one. This design allows for easy boarding, great freedom of movement, and it’s virtually unsinkable due to its self-bailing feature with scupper holes for draining water. Its stability makes it ideal for leisurely paddling.

We have single and double kayaks, so you can choose the combination which suits you and your group best.

Why Choose Us?

We have been operating since 2011 and offer much more than just a rental service. We’re proud to have introduced tens of thousands of people to paddle sports, fostering a community that cherishes the waterways and takes active steps to protect them.

We are committed to spreading knowledge about marine environments and their threats, especially plastic pollution.

Come and kayak with us!

Please Note: For your safety, traversing the Maida Hill tunnel on the Regent’s Canal independently is strictly prohibited.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will receive confirmation of your booking via email, and be able to speak directly to the centre via an online chat in case you have any further questions/requests.

Before embarking on your kayak adventure, we recommend you consult the weather forecast and dress accordingly, taking into consideration the day’s wind and possible rain conditions.

Remember to pack a spare set of clothes and water-appropriate shoes (you can find specific guidance below). While paddling in our Sit-On-Top kayaks, you might get splashed a bit, so be prepared to get a tad damp.

Please note that we do not provide dry bags, and while capsizing is not expected, a splashproof rucksack should keep your belongings dry if you decide to bring it along in the kayak.

What to Bring:

  • Spare shoes (your regular ones might get wet in the kayak)
  • Extra clothes in case you want to change into a dry set (limited shower facilities are available at Paddington)
  • Sunscreen and sun hat for sun protection
  • Glasses retainer
  • Refillable water bottle

For Warmer Weather:

Opt for quick-drying sportswear or gym wear – short or long sleeve tops, leggings, shorts, or quick-drying trousers (try to avoid denim and heavy cotton as they retain moisture and can make you chilly). Footwear-wise, neoprene water shoes are optimal. However, a pair of flat-soled trainers, converse, or hiking sandals with a heel strap should work well too – just make sure they won’t fall off and you don’t mind them getting wet. Flip-flops are best avoided as they can easily come off.

Also, consider bringing a light windproof/waterproof jacket or spare top in case you get chilly, along with a spare jumper or top for post-exercise warmth.

For Colder Weather:

We strongly recommend a windproof/waterproof light jacket, thermal top, and light thermals under wetsuits in colder weather. Don’t forget a wooly hat, as we tend to lose lots of heat through the head! We do have a limited selection of wetsuits available to borrow, but we might not have all sizes. A larger wetsuit with a tight-fitting layer underneath, like a base layer and a pair of leggings, can be a good alternative. Please contact us to check wetsuit availability and rental arrangements.

Cold weather can make your feet chilly, so we suggest wearing neoprene shoes during colder months. Always remember to bring a change of clothes, and a warm jumper or a cosy top to keep warm post-exercise.

You can take a bag with you, provided it isn’t too large and it is splash-proof. Dry bags are ideal!

We do not have lockers on site but personal belongings in a bag/rucksack can be left in the equipment cages on-site. Make sure you do not leave loose items – it’s best to put them in one or two bags. Shoes can be left on site too. We have never had anything go missing but avoid bringing valuables (or take them in a drybag) as the cages are shared by staff and all customers.

We highly recommend cycling to the site. There are cycle stands nearby. Bring a lock with you. Folded Brompton bikes can be left in the equipment cages.

Paddington Basin is easy to access by public transport, on foot or bike. We are right by the Rolling Bridge.

We would love it if you chose to cycle or walk as these are the best options for the environment, but here are all of your options to choose from:

  • Train: Paddington Station is only a few minutes walk from the Basin. The nearest London Underground stations are Edgware Road and Paddington, the latter also being served by National Rail. You can check train times and destinations on the National Rail Enquiries website.  From the main station facing the canal entrance, turn right and follow the canal. Cross the first bridge and continue along the canal heading east. You’ll see our canoes and SUP storage units on your left by the Rolling Bridge.
  • Bus: There a a number of buses going to and from Paddington. For routes and times please visit the Transport for London website.
  • Cycling: The best way to reach Paddington is by bike and there is secure parking right next to the barge.
  • Parking: Street parking may be available on North Wharf Road.
