Travel high onto one of Iceland’s most well-known glaciers on a Super Jeep journey that combines off-road driving with time on the ice itself. This half-day experience focuses on landscape, geology and access to areas only reachable by specially modified 4×4 vehicles.
The tour begins with a drive inland from the south coast, climbing the lower slopes of Eyjafjallajökull in a purpose-built Super Jeep. These vehicles are designed for snow, rough tracks and steep terrain, allowing access far beyond standard roads. As you gain elevation, views open up across farmland, rivers and the Atlantic, with the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) visible in clear conditions.
Higher up, the focus shifts to the glacier itself. You’ll step out onto the ice to explore its surface on foot, seeing crevasses, snow formations and the textures created by volcanic activity beneath the glacier. The walk is unhurried and suitable for most people, with plenty of time to take photos and understand how the glacier has been shaped by both ice and fire.
Throughout the tour, your guide explains the 2010 eruption and its impact on the surrounding landscape. Meltwater floods reshaped river systems and valleys below, and many of those changes are still visible today. The return journey follows a different perspective down the mountain where conditions allow, rounding out a varied and well-paced glacier experience.
Eyjafjallajökull rises sharply from Iceland’s south coast and is capped by a large ice-covered volcano. Its position makes it one of the most accessible glaciers for Super Jeep travel, offering wide views across the lowlands, coastline and nearby volcanic systems.
The meeting point is Brú Base on Road 249, located around 3 km past Seljalandsfoss near Hvolsvöllur. This base is easily reached by car and serves as a starting point for highland and glacier tours in the area. Optional pick-up and drop-off services are available for an additional fee when arranged in advance.
No previous glacier or off-road experience is required, but participants should be comfortable walking on uneven icy surfaces and spending several hours outdoors. The glacier walk is kept at an easy pace and adapted to group ability.
This experience is suitable for most people in fair general condition. Children must be at least 6 years old. Guests should be prepared for changing weather and colder temperatures at higher elevations.
Years of operating Super Jeep routes on Eyjafjallajökull mean this experience is built around access, safety and local knowledge rather than fixed sightseeing stops. Routes are adjusted to conditions on the day to maximise time on the glacier and views over the south coast.
Guides are locals with detailed understanding of the glacier and the 2010 eruption, many with Search and Rescue experience. That background ensures a calm, well-managed approach when operating in snow-covered and volcanic terrain.
