Activity Highlights:

Imagine parking your car at a gorgeous highland vantage point on a bright spring day. You suit up, take out your lightweight flying machine, and head over to join your friends already preparing for the day’s adventure. This is the unique experience of paragliding, a form of flying as simple as it is exhilarating, where you become truly one with the elements.

The Elementary Pilot course, following the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) syllabus for beginners, is your gateway to this exhilarating sport. The course equips you with the basic skills necessary to paraglide safely.

What Does the Course Cover?

Over the course of the training, your progress is logged in a personal BHPA training logbook. On completion, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the basics of flying a paraglider.

Please note that while the course enables you to fly a paraglider solo, it does not qualify you to fly outside of the school. For unsupervised flying anywhere in the world, the next step would be to gain a Club Pilot rating.

The Elementary Pilot Course includes:

Phase 1: Ground Training

  • Introductory Talk
  • Site Assessment Briefing
  • Introduction to Canopy and Equipment
  • Parachute Landing Roll

Phase 2: Ground Handling

  • Pre-flight Checks
  • Getting into the Glider
  • Launching the Glider
  • Directional Control

Phase 3: First Hops

  • Getting Airborne at Low Level

Phase 4: Flight Exercises

  • Flight Briefing
  • Communications (radio, bat signals, etc.)
  • Responsibility Briefing – You are the Pilot in Command!
  • Higher Flights
  • Introducing Turns
  • Basic Flight Plans

Phase 5: Theory and Exam

  • Theory Lecture on Meteorology, Principles of Flight, Anti-Collision and Air Law
  • EP 30 Minute Exam – (70% Pass Rate)

Frequently Asked Questions

Typically, it takes around ten days of flyable weather to train a would-be pilot to Club Pilot level, the minimum standard required to fly unsupervised with a recreational club. Your instructor will guide you through every step, from explaining the canopy layout to conducting your first short training hops down a gentle slope.

After becoming proficient at ground handling, controlling airspeed, and making gentle turns, you’ll graduate to higher and longer flights and be introduced to a limited amount of flying theory. Once you’ve completed the appropriate tasks and passed a simple theory exam, you’ll receive your Elementary Pilot award.

With another 4 – 6 days of instruction, you should be well on your way to completing your Club Pilot tasks. You’ll learn to soar and stay up in favourable winds for longer flights. Upon a positive assessment from your instructor and passing a simple theory examination, you’ll receive your Club Pilot rating, allowing you to start flying with your local recreational club and continue your journey towards more rewarding flying experiences.

There are no specific prerequisites for this course. As paragliding is a physically engaging sport, it’s generally recommended that participants are in good health and have a moderate level of physical fitness.

You don’t need to bring any equipment as all necessary gear is provided during the course. This allows you to focus on learning and mastering the basics of paragliding.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll be able to fly a paraglider solo but not outside of the school. For unsupervised flying anywhere in the world, you need to further advance to a Club Pilot rating.

No, the cost of BHPA membership is not included in the course fee. All students are required to secure a BHPA membership, which provides third-party insurance and allows you to gain any BHPA ratings.
