Learning to surf is easier when you have the right guidance from the very beginning. These beginner-friendly lessons are designed to help you build confidence in the water, understand the basics of surfing and enjoy every session while progressing at a pace that suits you.
Your session begins with a warm welcome and an introduction to your instructor, who will provide your surfboard, wetsuit and lycra before explaining how the lesson will run. After getting changed, you'll head to the beach for a safety briefing, where you'll learn about the conditions, how to handle your equipment correctly and the fundamentals of surfing on the sand before entering the water.
Once you're in the sea, your instructor will stay close by, offering individual coaching as you practise paddling, catching white-water waves and standing up on the board. Small group sizes mean plenty of personal feedback throughout the lesson, helping you improve with each attempt while enjoying a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Whether you choose a single session to give surfing a try or a multi-day course to build your skills, each lesson develops naturally from the previous one. As your confidence grows, you'll refine your technique, improve your balance and gain a better understanding of reading the waves and moving safely around the surf zone.
Lessons take place on Somo Beach, one of northern Spain's best-known surfing destinations. Its long sandy shoreline and consistent waves provide excellent conditions for beginners while offering plenty of space to spread out, making each lesson comfortable and enjoyable.
Away from the water, Somo has cafés, restaurants and scenic coastal walks, making it easy to spend the rest of your day by the sea. The beach is also well connected to nearby Santander, making it a convenient destination whether you're staying locally or visiting the region.
No previous surfing experience is required, making these lessons ideal if you're trying the sport for the first time. A reasonable level of general fitness and confidence in the water will help you get the most from your session.
Simply arrive ready to learn with swimwear, a towel and plenty of enthusiasm. Everything needed for the lesson itself is provided.
Learning in small groups allows instructors to focus on each participant rather than teaching a large class all at once. Every lesson is adapted to the ability of the group, helping beginners feel comfortable while giving more confident learners the opportunity to continue progressing.
Qualified instructors place a strong emphasis on safety alongside enjoyment, creating a welcoming environment where you can develop your surfing skills with confidence. Whether you're booking one day or a full week, you'll receive the same supportive coaching throughout your time on the beach.
Each lesson lasts for two hours, giving you plenty of time to practise both on the beach and in the water without feeling overly tired.
If you choose a two or five-day course, you'll enjoy a two-hour lesson on each scheduled day, allowing your skills to develop naturally over multiple sessions.
The one-day lesson is perfect if you'd simply like to experience surfing for the first time or add something different to your holiday.
Choosing two or five days gives you much more time to practise, receive ongoing coaching and become increasingly comfortable catching waves independently.
Groups are limited to a maximum of eight participants per instructor, allowing everyone to receive regular feedback throughout the lesson.
Smaller groups also create a more relaxed atmosphere, giving you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and improve your technique.
No. Your surfboard, wetsuit and surf lycra are all included as part of the lesson, so there's no need to hire equipment separately.
You'll simply need to bring swimwear, a towel and anything else you'd normally take for a day at the beach.
Many beginners manage to stand up during their first lesson, although everyone's progress is different and depends on conditions and individual confidence.
The aim is to help you improve safely while enjoying the experience, rather than rushing through the learning process.
Yes. Showers and changing rooms are available for you to use before and after your lesson.
This makes it easy to get changed comfortably and freshen up once you've finished surfing.
