What is Waterskiing?
Waterskiing is a tow sport where participants are pulled by a motorboat while wearing specially designed skis. The skier holds onto a handle attached to a rope and uses leg strength, core stability, and balance to stay upright and manoeuvre across the water. It’s a mix of skill, control, and timing, with the option to progress from basic straight-line skiing to carving turns and eventually tackling more advanced tricks or slalom skiing, where skiers navigate a course of buoys at speed.
Modern waterskiing generally uses two types of skis: combo skis (wider and easier for beginners) and slalom skis (used by more experienced skiers). There’s also the option of using a bar attached to the side of the boat (a ‘boom’) during lessons, which helps new learners find their balance without worrying about the rope. Waterskiing sessions are nearly always boat-led, with an experienced instructor at the helm to provide support, coaching, and safety cover. It’s accessible to most ages and abilities and can be adapted to suit individuals, families, and group bookings.
Sessions usually start on land with a full safety briefing, basic technique demo, and kit check. Beginners will learn how to position themselves in the water, how to hold the handle, and how to rise up onto the skis as the boat pulls away. Once confident, you’ll move onto starts from the water, working on posture, ski control, and staying balanced while moving. Each run typically lasts a few minutes, with short breaks between for feedback and recovery. Most first-timers are able to get up on the skis within a few attempts.
What Should I Expect from a Waterskiing Session?
Waterskiing sessions are designed around your level, whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to fine-tune specific skills. For those new to the sport, sessions will begin with an introduction to equipment, safety gear (typically including a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet), and what to expect on the water. Time is spent getting used to the feel of the skis and practicing deep-water starts, which is the key foundation to building confidence.
Guided by a qualified instructor, you’ll receive real-time coaching either from inside the boat or through a training boom. In many beginner setups, the boat speed is carefully adjusted to match your comfort level, allowing you to focus on form and control. As you progress, you can learn how to edge from side to side, develop stronger turns, or transition to a single slalom ski.
All necessary gear is usually provided, and sessions are often run from lakes, reservoirs, or calm coastal spots. You don’t need to be super fit or have any prior experience to try it—just comfortable in open water and able to follow basic instructions. Whether you’re trying it once as a taster or booking a series of lessons, waterskiing is a great way to get active, challenge yourself, and have fun on the water.
