• Ruts, cambers and shallow water: choose a line, keep the bars straight, and let the tyres track—resist snatching at the brakes.

Safety, kit and weather
Venues provide a full-face helmet and usually goggles, gloves and overalls. Bring sturdy boots, long sleeves, and layers you can add at breaks; a lightweight waterproof helps in showers. Instructors enforce spacing, stopping points and no-overtake rules. Sessions run in most weather—mud improves traction—but extreme ice, wind or flooding may prompt route changes or postponement.

Terrain and grading
Routes typically mix farm tracks, woodland singletrack, fields and purpose-built features (berms, shallow steps, small fordings).
