Entry-level freedivers can gain essential skills and confidence with the SSI Basic Freediver course. Combining online theory with in-water practice, it teaches safe breath-hold techniques, buddy procedures and proper use of equipment in a controlled pool environment. Successful completion awards the internationally recognised SSI Basic Freediver certification, opening the door to further freediving training.
Course participants begin with online learning modules that cover the theory of freediving, including physiology, safety, equalisation techniques, and equipment use. These modules prepare you for the practical elements and ensure you understand safe diving principles before entering the water. The instructor provides guidance throughout, ensuring all concepts are clearly understood.
In-water sessions take place in a 25-metre pool with a depth of 3 metres. You will practise breath-hold techniques, streamlining, proper weighting, and buddy procedures under close supervision. Exercises are designed to gradually build confidence, improve efficiency underwater, and teach safe dive progression. For those interested, optional open water dives in Anglesey or Capernwray Quarry allow you to apply skills in a natural environment, enhancing experience and technique.
Upon completion, you will receive SSI Basic Freediver certification, confirming your competence in pool-based freediving and providing the foundation for further courses.
Sessions are held at St Martins in Oswestry, featuring a well-maintained 25-metre indoor pool with a maximum depth of 3 metres. Its calm, controlled environment is ideal for learning essential freediving skills safely. Facilities are equipped to support both theory and practical components, ensuring a smooth and comfortable learning experience.
Oswestry is conveniently located close to the North Wales border, making it accessible from surrounding towns and cities. The town provides nearby amenities and a friendly community atmosphere, making travel and attendance straightforward for evening sessions.
Participants must be comfortable in the water and able to swim. No previous freediving or scuba experience is required, though a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most from practical exercises.
You should be healthy and free from conditions that could interfere with safe breath-hold diving. The course is suitable for beginners and will provide full guidance and supervision throughout all training sessions.
Led by an experienced freediving instructor with extensive knowledge of local waters and marine life, the course combines high-quality teaching with a focus on safety, confidence, and enjoyment. Participants benefit from personalised guidance and a supportive environment throughout both theory and practical sessions.
The approach ensures students not only learn technical skills but also develop awareness of safety procedures and the importance of a buddy system. With small group sessions, all necessary equipment provided, and optional open water practice, it’s a comprehensive introduction to freediving that builds a strong foundation for further training.
