Understanding how to paddle safely is an important part of enjoying time on the water and building confidence in different conditions. This Paddle UK-certified course combines practical rescue training with environmental awareness and trip planning, helping paddleboarders develop safer habits and stronger decision-making skills.
Beginning on the beach, the session introduces the equipment, clothing, and additional safety gear commonly used for paddleboarding. Instructors explain how different weather conditions and water environments can affect paddling decisions, along with how to access suitable forecasts and assess conditions before heading onto the sea.
Practical exercises then move onto the water, where participants learn how to recover safely after falling from the board and assist others if needed. Rescue scenarios are demonstrated before being practised individually and in pairs, helping paddlers become more comfortable managing common situations.
Planning and environmental awareness are also covered throughout the course, including route choice, understanding personal limits, and recognising changing conditions. The session is designed to remain approachable for beginners while still providing useful safety skills for more experienced paddleboarders.
Courses are usually held at Tenby South Beach, where sheltered water and wide sandy launch areas provide suitable conditions for practical rescue work and safety exercises.
Alternative nearby locations may occasionally be used if weather or sea conditions require a more protected venue. Participants are informed in advance if any changes are needed.
No previous paddleboarding experience is required to attend the course. Beginners are welcome, along with paddlers wanting to improve their confidence and understanding of safety on the water.
Participants should be comfortable taking part in practical water-based activities, including falling from the board and practising rescues. Children aged 14–17 must attend in pairs or be accompanied by an adult.
Delivered by Paddle UK-qualified coaches and coastal leaders, the course combines practical instruction with real coastal paddling experience gained across the Pembrokeshire coastline. Sessions focus on creating supportive learning environments where participants can develop confidence without pressure.
Carefully selected locations and small group teaching allow instructors to tailor guidance to different ability levels and board types. Practical exercises are kept realistic and relevant to the conditions paddleboarders commonly encounter on the sea.
