Learning how to manage common situations on the water is an important part of becoming a safer and more confident paddler. This Paddle UK-certified course combines practical rescue exercises with safety awareness, trip planning, and understanding conditions, helping kayakers develop useful decision-making skills for real paddling environments.
Beginning on the beach, the course starts with a discussion around equipment, clothing, and safety gear used for different styles of kayaking, including sit-on-top and sea kayaks. Guidance is tailored to the type of craft you normally paddle, helping you understand limitations, setup, and safe preparation before heading onto the water.
Practical rescue work then takes place in the sea, where instructors demonstrate capsize procedures, assisted rescues, and different recovery options. You’ll have the opportunity to practise these skills yourself in a controlled environment while learning how changing wind and weather conditions can affect rescue situations.
Additional sections focus on environmental awareness and planning, including how to assess suitable paddling locations, interpret weather forecasts, and choose conditions that match your ability level. The course finishes with guidance on paddling safely with others and managing common issues that may arise during trips.
Sessions are primarily based at Tenby South Beach, where sheltered water conditions provide a suitable environment for practical rescue exercises and safety demonstrations. The wide sandy beach also allows space for land-based discussions and equipment sessions before entering the water.
Alternative nearby locations may occasionally be used if weather or sea conditions require a more sheltered setting. Any changes are confirmed in advance to ensure the safest possible learning environment for the group.
No previous kayaking experience is required, making the course suitable for beginners as well as more experienced paddlers wanting to improve their safety awareness. Participants should feel comfortable taking part in practical water-based activities, including capsize practice.
A moderate level of mobility is needed for entering and exiting the kayak and participating in rescue exercises. Participants aged 14–17 must attend in pairs or be accompanied by an adult.
Qualified Paddle UK coaches and leaders deliver the course using real-world coastal experience alongside nationally recognised safety standards. Sessions are designed to remain practical and approachable, helping paddlers build confidence while learning skills that can genuinely improve safety on the water.
Strong local knowledge of Pembrokeshire’s coastline allows environmental discussions to remain relevant to the types of conditions paddlers are likely to encounter. Small group sizes also allow instructors to adapt guidance to individual experience levels and equipment types.
