Sea kayaking opens up access to caves, sheltered coastline, and longer coastal journeys that can’t be reached from land. This beginner-friendly course is designed to build confidence and provide a strong foundation in practical paddling skills, whether you are completely new to kayaking or looking to improve existing experience on the sea.
Starting with a briefing on the day’s weather, tide, and conditions, the session introduces the equipment and basic paddling techniques before heading onto sheltered water. Early exercises focus on balance, control, turning, and efficient forward paddling to help build confidence from the start.
As the day progresses, you’ll spend time practising manoeuvres within the bay before venturing along a short stretch of sheltered coastline. Along the way, instructors explain how wind, tide, and other environmental factors influence paddling decisions and route choices.
Rescue techniques and capsize recovery can also be introduced for those wanting additional confidence on the water. A break for lunch is taken on the beach during the day, giving time to rest while discussing progress and planning the next stage of the session.
Sessions are usually based around Tenby South Beach and nearby sheltered sections of coastline chosen to provide calm and suitable learning conditions. Locations are selected based on weather and sea state to create the safest and most enjoyable environment for beginners.
Protected bays and easy launch points allow participants to focus on skill development without dealing with more demanding conditions too early. Final meeting information is confirmed before the session.
No previous kayaking experience is required to join this course. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as paddlers wanting to improve confidence and technique in sheltered sea conditions.
Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared to spend a full day outdoors on the coast. Confidence in water is helpful, although rescue skills are taught progressively during the session.
Qualified Paddle UK coaches and leaders deliver the course using small group sizes and practical instruction tailored to beginner paddlers. Coaching focuses on building confidence steadily while introducing the skills needed for safe and enjoyable sea kayaking.
Years of experience operating along the Pembrokeshire coastline allow suitable venues to be chosen for changing conditions, helping create supportive learning environments with plenty of opportunities for coastal exploration.
