### Highlights
This five-day technical winter climbing course is for mountain enthusiasts ready to push their skills into steeper, more challenging terrain. Based in the heart of Torridon and Fisherfield, the trip combines guided climbing with instructional progression, with options for either full board or self-catered stays. Key Details Duration: 5 days (Saturday evening–Thursday or Friday morning departure) Group size: Maximum 3 participants per instructor Grading: Suitable for grade II/III winter climbers Options: Fully Inclusive or Trip Only Equipment: All specialist gear and local transport included Key Skills Rescue ropework and emergency procedures Building and assessing winter anchors Movement techniques for steep gullies, buttresses, and ridges Route planning based on weather, conditions, and objectives Risk awareness and group decision-making What to Expect This is a practical and hands-on climbing course designed to build confidence on steeper ground. Throughout the five days, you’ll work closely with your guide on classic winter routes across Torridon, Fisherfield, and occasionally Skye, depending on weather. Instruction is tailored to your level, but expect to focus on techniques for winter belays, climbing movement, placing protection, and multi-pitch strategies. Low group ratios ensure plenty of one-to-one time on the rope, and by the end of the trip, you’ll have developed a solid technical foundation for winter climbing in Scotland or the Alps. Each day starts with a briefing over breakfast to assess conditions and agree on the best location. Some days may be best spent climbing on Liathach’s steep buttresses or the hidden gullies of Beinn Eighe. Others may take you out to An Teallach for longer ridgelines and big descents. The terrain is serious, but the instruction supports your learning throughout. This is ideal for those looking to climb independently in the future or simply wanting to experience quiet, remote winter climbs with expert guidance. Expect to be moving across snowfields, ice, and exposed rock with a mixture of roped climbing and mountaineering techniques. Fully Inclusive Option If you choose the Fully Inclusive option, you’ll stay six nights in a comfortable guest house near Lochcarron or Applecross. All meals are provided, including homemade dinners and packed lunches for the hill. You'll return each day to a warm fire, local food, and the chance to relax and review the day. All instruction, specialist equipment, and in-area transport…

## FAQs

### Is this trip suitable for someone new to winter climbing?

This course is ideal for those with some prior experience in winter walking, scrambling, or summer rock climbing who are looking to step into more technical winter mountaineering. It's not a beginner-level introduction to winter conditions, but rather a progression into steeper and more complex ground using ropework and climbing skills. Participants should already be confident moving over broken or graded terrain and be comfortable spending full days in the mountains. If you're unsure whether it's the right fit, feel free to contact us via the adventuro chat below—we can help match you to the most suitable trip.

### How fit do I need to be to join this course?

You’ll need a good base level of mountain fitness, as the days are long and the weather conditions can be challenging. Expect to be out for 6–8 hours per day on uneven, steep ground while carrying a winter pack with technical gear. While this isn’t a race or endurance event, it does involve multiple days of sustained physical effort. If you're comfortable doing back-to-back days in the hills with a full winter pack, you'll be in a good position to enjoy the course.

### What sort of climbing and technical skills will I learn?

The course covers key winter climbing techniques, including how to place winter anchors, build belays in snow and mixed ground, and move efficiently on grade II/III routes. You'll also cover ropework for security on steep terrain and basic rescue methods. These sessions are taught progressively with hands-on guidance from your instructor. By the end of the week, you should be more confident operating on winter climbs, whether you're planning to lead or be an informed second.

### What is the difference between the Fully Inclusive and Trip Only options?

The Fully Inclusive option covers six nights' guest house accommodation, all meals, instruction, equipment, and local transport—just turn up and we’ll take care of everything. It’s perfect if you want to maximise your time on the hill and unwind in the evenings with good food and local hospitality. The Trip Only option includes all guiding, equipment, and transport during the course, but you arrange your own accommodation and meals. This is a great choice if you prefer flexibility or already have somewhere you like to stay in the Lochcarron area.

### What kit will I need to bring?

We provide all technical winter climbing equipment including axes, crampons, helmets, harnesses, ropes, and hardware, so you won’t need to worry about specialist gear. You just need to bring your personal mountain clothing suitable for cold, wet, and windy conditions. This includes insulated layers, waterproofs, gloves, hats, gaiters, and solid mountain boots compatible with crampons (B2 minimum, ideally B3). A full kit list will be sent after booking to help you prepare properly.

### How flexible is the itinerary depending on weather?

Very. One of the key advantages of our location is the range of venues within a short drive—from the great corries of Beinn Eighe and Liathach to the ridges and gullies of An Teallach and beyond. Each day’s venue is selected based on the conditions, group ability, and learning goals. Because we’re local, we can make good calls on where to go each day, often avoiding poor weather entirely by shifting venues. Flexibility is built into the course to make sure you get the most out of the week, regardless of what the weather throws at us.
