### Highlights
Gain the confidence to safely handle a jetski with this RYA-accredited course. Whether using your own craft or hiring one, this one-day session covers essential techniques for safe and responsible riding. It’s a great way to learn key handling and navigation skills while building confidence on the water. Key Details Duration: 7 hours Start time: 9am Group size: Up to 6 participants (or 1:1 course available) Equipment: Bring your own jetski or hire one from the centre Accreditation: RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate Key Skills Safe launch and recovery techniques Low and high-speed handling skills Effective turning and stopping methods Riding with a passenger and towing awareness Navigation, passage planning and decision-making What to Expect The day begins with an onshore safety briefing covering basic theory, launch preparation, and an introduction to the craft’s controls. Instructors outline the day’s plan, explain sea area awareness, and go through essential safety checks before heading out onto the water. Once afloat, you’ll start with low-speed manoeuvres including slow turns, controlled stops, and close-quarters handling. As your confidence grows, you’ll move on to higher-speed riding, learning how to balance speed with control and execute smooth turns. You’ll also cover practical exercises in navigation and passage planning, using real conditions to make decisions on safe routes and positioning. Towards the end of the session, you’ll have the chance to demonstrate your skills through a short assessment and receive feedback on technique, safety awareness, and next steps for development. On successful completion, you’ll receive your RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate, valid for both personal and commercial use. Prerequisites No previous experience is required, but participants should be comfortable on the water and able to swim confidently in case of capsize. Minimum age for the RYA PWC Proficiency Course is 12 years, although younger riders may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. If you’re bringing your own jetski, it must be in safe working condition with valid insurance and registration. Wetsuits, buoyancy aids and safety equipment must also be brought or hired through the centre.

## FAQs

### What does the RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate allow me to do?

The certificate is recognised worldwide and demonstrates that you can safely operate a jetski or personal watercraft. Many hire companies and marinas require it before allowing independent use of their equipment. It can also be used to support commercial or instructor qualifications if you progress further in the future. Having this certificate also ensures you understand local regulations, right-of-way rules, and how to handle various sea conditions confidently. It’s both a safety qualification and a foundation for more advanced training.

### Can I bring my own jetski?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own craft for the course. It must be fully insured, in safe working order, and have all necessary safety equipment onboard. The team will check the craft before the session begins to ensure it meets RYA safety standards. Bringing your own ski can make the course more relevant as you’ll practise directly on your own equipment. It also helps you become familiar with how your specific craft responds under different conditions. Please ensure you have 20 litres of fuel with you.

### What if I don’t own a jetski?

Jetski hire is available for an additional cost. Hired skis are well maintained and fully equipped with safety gear, making them suitable for training. The centre ensures that each participant receives individual instruction and full control time on the ski during their session. If you’re new to personal watercraft, this is a great way to learn before committing to buying your own. You’ll gain valuable insights into what features to look for when choosing a ski.

### What should I wear and bring with me?

You’ll need a wetsuit, suitable footwear (like neoprene boots), a towel, and a change of clothes. Buoyancy aids are provided if you’re hiring a ski, but you’re welcome to use your own if it meets RYA standards. It’s also essential to bring sunscreen, water, and snacks for the day. There will be breaks between training sessions to refuel and rest.

### How many people are on each course?

Courses usually run with up to six people, but all practical training is conducted one-to-one on the water. This ensures personalised feedback and time to practise each skill without pressure. The onshore parts are run as a small group, giving you a chance to learn from others’ questions and experiences. It’s a relaxed and friendly setting that balances independence and teamwork.

### Will I receive a certificate at the end?

Yes. Upon successful completion, you’ll be issued an official RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate. This is a lifelong qualification recognised by authorities and operators worldwide. The instructor will provide feedback and confirm you’ve demonstrated all required competencies before awarding the certificate.

### Is there a minimum number of people needed for the course to run?

Yes, the course requires at least two people to run. You’re welcome to book individually, and the team will aim to pair you with another participant if you’re the only one booked. This ensures everyone benefits from a fully supported learning experience while keeping the session practical and engaging for all.
