Our rock scrambling adventures can take you to various stunning locations throughout the Lake District. With its diverse landscapes, the Lake District offers the ideal backdrop for this thrilling activity. Many of our routes are conveniently accessible from the charming towns of Ambleside and Windermere.

Here are some routes to choose from. Don’t worry, we can help to advise if you are unfamiliar with the area:

  • Raven Crag, Yewdale: This spot offers the perfect introduction to rock scrambling, boasting exceptionally grippy rock surfaces and easy access close to the road. It rewards scramblers with stunning vistas overlooking Coniston Water.
  • Tarn Crag, Langdale: Tarn Crag presents a range of scrambles, from grade 1 to 3, and even some simpler rock climbs. The crag’s location is impressive, set against the backdrop of high-quality Borrowdale volcanic rock. Scrambling here can be enjoyed as a standalone adventure or combined with other routes in the area.
  • Pavey Ark, Langdale: Jack’s Rake is the quintessential scramble to the summit of Pavey Ark, a true gem in the Lake District. The route offers positive handholds throughout, breathtaking scenery, and views that are hard to surpass. While it appears more straightforward, it demands caution as the exposure increases.
  • Harrison Stickle, Langdale: On busy days when many climbers ascend Jack’s Rake, Harrison Stickle offers a quieter alternative. The superb rock quality and adventurous feel of the route make it a hidden treasure. This scramble leads all the way to the mountain’s summit for a rewarding experience.
  • Ill Crag, Eskdale: Accessible via Esk Hause from Langdale, this route takes you high above The Great Moss of Eskdale for a challenging day out. The scrambling takes place on rough, grippy Borrowdale volcanic rock, culminating in an exhilarating summit ascent. This is one of the longest routes in the Lake District.
  • Raven Crag, Langdale: Raven Crag provides various options for scramblers, including a grade 2 route at the right end of the main crag and multiple grade 1 routes leading to higher Langdale scrambles. Alternatively, there’s Middlefell Buttress on the left side of the main crag, a popular easy rock climb (difficulty) that offers scenic abseil descents and further scrambling up Thorn Crag and Loft Crag.
  • Pinnacle Ridge, Patterdale: This photogenic, ‘Alpinesque’ ridge promises a rewarding day above Ullswater. Rated at grade 3, it offers exciting positions and stunning vistas. The Helvellyn range provides the perfect backdrop for those who appreciate scenic exploration.
  • Scafell, Wasdale: Broad Stand, where Coleridge is rumored to have descended from Scafell’s summit, offers a challenging route. The initial difficulties are akin to rock climbing, and higher up, it transitions into classic scrambling. The impressive scenery makes it a journey well worth embarking upon.
  • Pike ‘O Blisco, Langdale: Known for its exceptional rock quality, Pike ‘O Blisco offers enjoyable scrambling for both beginners and experienced scramblers. The breathtaking views, easy access, and abundant fantastic rock make it a favorite destination.
  • Harter Fell, Duddon Valley: Tucked away in a quiet corner, Harter Fell offers excellent scrambling opportunities with seclusion. The rock outcrops along the route to the summit provide continuous interest for scramblers seeking solitude.
  • Long Crag, Coniston: This fine ridge is situated just above Coniston village. Abundant high-quality rock makes gaining altitude easy, granting increasingly spectacular views of Coniston Water.
  • Pillar Rock: Scaling Pillar Rock is at the pinnacle of scrambling and requires a rope for both ascent and descent. While the scrambling is not overly difficult, the steepness and exposure are severe, making it a day out to remember.

Whether you have a specific route in mind or not, we can tailor your scrambling adventure to your preferences.

Ideally, participants should have a head for heights, but we’ve successfully guided many without this attribute who still loved the experience. We can customise the day to accommodate all levels of ability, making it a fantastic family day out and an excellent way to keep the kids active.
