### Highlights
If you spend any time on the water in a kayak, canoe or SUP, knowing how to deal with unexpected situations makes a big difference. This one-day course is designed to build confidence in sheltered water environments, focusing on practical safety and rescue skills that you can use straight away. 🧭 Key Details Duration: 1 day (around 6 hours) Location: Whitewave, Linicro, Portree Minimum age: None 🧑‍🏫 Key Skills Safety decision-making in sheltered water Self-rescue techniques across paddlesports Assisted and contact rescue methods Towing and recovery skills Understanding paddlesport safety frameworks Practical problem-solving on the water 🛟 What to Expect Throughout the day, you’ll spend time both on and off the water working through a range of real-world paddlesport scenarios. Your instructor will guide you through key safety principles before moving into practical sessions covering rescues, assisted recoveries, and self-rescue techniques. Everything is broken down clearly so you can build confidence step by step, regardless of your current experience level. You’ll also look at how to make better decisions on the water, including how to assess conditions and manage risk in sheltered environments. A big part of the day is hands-on practice, so you’ll have plenty of time working through different situations in your chosen craft, whether that’s kayak, canoe or SUP. By the end of the course, you’ll have a much clearer understanding of how to handle common issues on the water and support others if needed. 📍 Location Sessions are based around Whitewave in Linicro, just outside Portree, with access to sheltered coastal and inland water suitable for training. This makes it an ideal area for practising rescues and safety techniques in realistic but controlled conditions. The exact meeting point will be confirmed a day or two before the course, usually somewhere around the Trotternish peninsula. Skye roads can get busy, particularly during peak periods, so it’s worth allowing extra travel time to avoid rushing your start. 🧑‍🏫 Prerequisites Some prior experience in your chosen craft is needed, as you’ll be working in a sheltered water environment where basic control of your kayak, canoe or SUP is expected. You don’t need advanced skills, but you should feel comfortable paddling independently. This course is suitable for those preparing for instructor training or anyone wanting to feel safer and more confident on the water. It’s designed to be practical and sup…

## FAQs

### Who is this course suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone who already has some experience in kayaking, canoeing or SUP and wants to build safety and rescue skills. It’s also ideal preparation for those planning to progress onto instructor training. You don’t need to be advanced, but you should be comfortable controlling your craft in sheltered water. The focus is on developing practical skills rather than teaching basic paddling.

### Do I need to be working towards an instructor qualification?

No, this isn’t a requirement. While it’s a great stepping stone for instructor training, it’s also valuable for recreational paddlers who want to feel more confident on the water. Many people take the course simply to improve their personal safety skills. It gives you tools that are useful in a wide range of paddling situations.

### What will I learn on the course?

You’ll cover a range of safety and rescue techniques, including self-rescue, assisted rescues, and towing skills. There’s also a focus on safety frameworks and decision-making in sheltered environments. Everything is taught in a practical way, with plenty of time to practise each skill. The aim is to leave you feeling more capable and aware on the water.

### How physically demanding is it?

The course is fairly active, as you’ll be in and out of the water practising rescues and manoeuvres. A reasonable level of fitness and comfort in the water is important. That said, everything is taught at a steady pace, and breaks are included throughout the day. You’ll never be pushed beyond what you’re comfortable with.

### What craft can I use?

You can take part in the course using a kayak, canoe or SUP, depending on your preference. The skills are adapted to suit each type of craft. You’ll spend the day focusing on rescues and techniques relevant to how you paddle. This makes it useful no matter what you normally use on the water.

### What should I bring?

You should bring something to wear under a wetsuit (swim wear / sports wear) and a wetsuit if you have one. Otherwise we can provide a wetsuit! Avoid cotton, as it becomes uncomfortable when wet. A towel, spare clothes, and warm layers are also recommended. You’ll also want food and water for the day, as there will be breaks throughout.

### Where do we meet?

You’ll meet around Whitewave in Linicro, near Portree, but the exact meeting point will be confirmed a day or two before the course. This allows the best location to be chosen based on conditions. Most sessions take place around the Trotternish peninsula. Travel times can be longer than expected on Skye, so plan accordingly.

### Will I get wet?

Yes, you should expect to get wet during the course as many of the exercises involve entering the water. This is an important part of practising rescue techniques properly. Wetsuits will be used, and all equipment can be provided. The focus is on keeping you comfortable while learning effectively.
