  2. Rescue Skills for Various Scenarios: The course provides hands-on training in a range of rescue techniques. Participants will learn to handle different emergency scenarios, equipping them with the skills to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
  3. Personal Paddling Skills: A crucial part of the course, this focuses on enhancing the instructor’s own paddling abilities. The aim is to ensure that instructors can confidently lead and manage groups on the water.

Course Highlights:

  • Practical Skill Development: Participants will learn to kit up a group, manage initial familiarisation activities, and engage learners through games and activities. The course emphasises using mini-journeys as a tool for learning, adventure, and exploration.
  • Craft Range: Training covers a variety of stable crafts including kayaks (both open-cockpit and closed-cockpit), open canoes, sit-on-tops, and stand-up paddleboards. This diverse exposure ensures instructors are versatile in their teaching abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

The centre is located in the heart of Perthshire, a short distance from Perth City Centre. You can find us on the banks of the River Tay, with signage to guide you in from major routes.

We will send you the precise address and postcode upon booking, but here is a summary to help you plan your visit:

  • By Foot: From Perth City Centre, you have two options:
    • Take the scenic riverside walk from Rodney Gardens, noting it can be muddy in winter or a wildflower path in summer. Be mindful of high tide times, as the path isn’t accessible one hour either side of high tide. This path’s conditions can vary.
    • For a firmer path, cross South Street bridge, turn right onto Dundee Road, and follow the pavement directly to the centre.
  • By Car: Use the postcode provided Sat Nav.
    • From Dundee, take A90, then A85, staying on Dundee Rd and look for brown tourist signs.
    • From Perth, go over South Street bridge, right on Dundee Rd/A85.
    • From Edinburgh, take M90, exit at Junction 11 for A85, and follow the signs.
  • By Bike: A cycle lane is available along Dundee Road, suitable for experienced cyclists. You can also follow the riverside walk, but may need to dismount in places. Secure bike storage is planned for the future
  • By Bus: Perth City Centre has bus stops about a 40-minute walk from our centre. A limited bus service stops at Walnut Grove, a 5-minute walk away, and an electric bus stop is directly outside our centre. Check Google Maps for the latest schedules and stops with the provided postcode.

We monitor the weather closely and will inform you in advance if conditions are unsafe for paddling. We can reschedule your session for a later date if this is the case. However, a bit of rain and a grey sky won’t stop us. We will only reschedule if the conditions are unsafe.

It’s ideal for individuals aged 14 and over who wish to instruct paddlesport activities in clubs, centres, or similar settings.

The course runs for two consecutive days, providing a mix of practical and theoretical training.

You need Foundation Safety & Rescue Training and membership with the Scottish Canoe Association or equivalent. Registration for the course is also required.

Assessment focuses on professional standards, personal paddling skills, and rescue techniques.

How it works:

  1. Make a booking.
  2. The centre will accept your booking, usually within an hour or two.
  3. Pay for the booking to confirm it.

If you have specific questions, please put them in the comments section, and the centre will answer before you pay.
