Frequently Asked Questions

The Paddlesport Touring Leader Assessment is designed to be a relaxed and supportive evaluation of your paddling leadership skills. The assessment typically takes place over one paddling day, but depending on the logistics and suitability of the environment, it may extend to two days. During the assessment, you will need to demonstrate your personal paddling skills, leadership and group management abilities, rescue techniques, and theoretical knowledge. Our assessor, Dan Daley, will guide you through the process, ensuring a stress-free experience with you at the centre. Prior planning and discussions about logistics will help ensure you are well-prepared and comfortable.

  • Safeguarding Training: Must be completed within the last 3 years.
  • First Aid Certification: Valid within the last 3 years and appropriate for this award.
  • Full National Association Membership: Required for registration.
  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Paddling Skills: While there is no formal requirement for personal performance or safety awards, you should be able to independently paddle on open water and navigate rivers up to and including short stretches of Grade 2. Having a personal performance award in your chosen discipline is beneficial but not mandatory.

Preparation for the assessment involves ensuring you are confident and competent in your paddling abilities. Here are some steps to help you prepare:

  • Practice Paddling Skills: Make sure you can independently paddle on open water and navigate rivers up to Grade 2.
  • Review Rescue Techniques: Be proficient in rescue skills and understand how to manage rescues in various scenarios.
  • Study Leadership Principles: Familiarise yourself with the principles of paddlesport leadership, including group management and leading mixed craft journeys.
  • Complete Necessary Training: Ensure your Safeguarding Training and First Aid Certification are up to date.
  • Plan Logistically: Discuss logistics with our team and ensure you have participants to lead on the assessment day. Take advantage of any eLearning resources available to reinforce your knowledge.

We run these assessments at multiple locations across the UK. You can choose a date and location on the booking form, or feel free to contact the adventuro team via the live chat if you are unsure.
