Course Breakdown

Our two-day course covers a comprehensive range of topics to ensure you are fully prepared to lead white water kayaking trips:

Day One:

  • Introduction to leadership and group management in white water.
  • Personal paddling skills and techniques.
  • Rescue skills and safety protocols.

Day Two:

  • Advanced technical skills and boat control.
  • Risk assessment and environmental awareness.
  • Practical leadership exercises and navigation.

Location

We cover various locations in the UK for our courses.

Most of our kayaking courses take place on the River Dart in Dartmoor – meeting point TQ13 7NT.

We also run courses at:

  • Lee Valley White Water Centre (EN9 1AB)
  • The National White Water Centre (LL23 7NU)
  • Holme Pierrepont White Water (LL23 7NU)

We also travel to individuals and clubs to run training and assessments, covering most of England, up to Nottingham and Wales.

Prerequisites

To enrol in the BCAB White Water Leader Training course, you should meet the following prerequisites:

  • Confident in your ability to paddle on grade 2/3 water.
  • Comfortable swimming in normal paddling clothing suitable for a moving water environment.
  • Completion of a White Water Safety Training Course.
  • Minimum of 16 years old.
  • Full National Association Membership.
  • Ability to paddle to the standard of the Progressive White Water Award or 3 Star White Water Kayak.

  • Gear Check: Ensure you have appropriate paddling clothing and equipment for a moving water environment.
  • Review Leadership Principles: Familiarise yourself with leadership and group management principles relevant to white water kayaking.

The become certified, you will need to attend a follow-on one-day assessment. This is another practical, on-the-water day, where you will be assessed against the Paddle UK Paddlesport White Water Kayak Leader criteria and receive your certification upon successful completion.

Flexible

  • You can cancel until 48 hours before your booking for a full refund.
  • If you cancel after that, you’ll pay 50% up to 24 hours beforehand and the full amount after 24 hours.
  • Where applicable, deposit payments are non-refundable.

Moderate

  • You can cancel until 5 days before your booking for a full refund.
  • If you cancel after that, you’ll pay 50% up to 48 hours beforehand and the full amount after 48 hours.
  • Where applicable, deposit payments are non-refundable.

Firm

  • To receive a full refund, you must cancel at least 14 days before their booking.
  • If you cancel between 7 and 14 days before your booking, you’ll pay 50% of the cost.
  • If you cancel less than 7 days before the booking starts, you’ll pay the full amount.

Strict

  • To receive a full refund, you must cancel at least 30 days before your booking.
