Expect plenty of time on the rock with guidance throughout to help you progress. 🧗‍♂️ Key Details Duration: Full day Group Size: Private group up to 4 people Location: Peak District or Wye Valley sport climbing crags Experience Level: Suitable for climbers who can belay independently 🎯 Key Skills Lead belaying and dynamic belaying techniques Safe and efficient clipping skills Understanding and using sport climbing equipment Fall awareness and risk management Setting up top ropes on sport anchors 🧭 What to Expect Early stages of the day focus on building a solid foundation in lead climbing systems. You’ll cover how to manage rope effectively, belay a lead climber safely and understand the key differences from indoor climbing. Clipping techniques are introduced and practised to help avoid common mistakes. Time on the rock is used to apply these skills in a controlled way, starting with supported lead climbing and gradually building confidence. Attention is given to body position when clipping, route reading and making good decisions while climbing. You’ll also look at fall awareness and how to manage risk in a practical setting. Later in the session, focus shifts towards independence, including setting up top ropes from anchors and understanding how to safely finish and clean routes. The day finishes with a clear understanding of how to approach sport climbing outdoors with confidence. 📍 Location Sessions take place at sport climbing crags in the Peak District or Wye Valley, depending on conditions and suitability. These locations offer well-bolted routes across a range of grades, making them ideal for learning and progression. Careful venue selection ensures access to routes that allow skills to be introduced gradually and built upon throughout the day. Final meeting details are confirmed ahead of the session. ✅ Prerequisites Participants should already be confident belaying and managing basic climbing systems. ## FAQs

### What happens if the weather is bad?

Outdoor sessions will always go ahead where conditions are safe and suitable, as weather can often change quickly. A decision will be made as close to the session as possible to give the best chance of running the day as planned. If conditions are not suitable and the session needs to be cancelled, you will be offered an alternative date at no extra cost. The aim is to make sure you still get the full experience without losing your booking.

### Is this course only available as a private session?

Bookings are mainly offered as private sessions for small groups, allowing the day to be tailored to your experience and goals. This also gives more flexibility with pacing and structure. If you would prefer to join others, open group sessions may be available on request. You can get in touch to check for suitable dates.

### Do I need to bring my own equipment?

All essential equipment can be provided, so you don’t need to worry about bringing your own gear if you’re new or don’t have access to it. Everything supplied will be suitable for the session and properly maintained. If you do have your own equipment, you are welcome to use it. This can be helpful if you are already familiar with your gear and want to continue using it during your session.

### Where do sessions take place?

Outdoor sessions are typically run in the Peak District, offering a range of locations suited to different abilities and types of climbing. Specific venues are chosen based on the goals of the session and current conditions.

### Is there a minimum age for taking part?

There is no strict minimum age for sessions, making them accessible to a wide range of participants. Each booking is considered on an individual basis to ensure the experience is suitable and enjoyable. For anyone under the age of 18, an adult must be present throughout the session. This helps provide support, supervision, and a safe environment for younger climbers.

### Do I need to be leading indoors already?

Previous indoor leading experience is helpful but not essential. If you are confident top roping and belaying, you can still take part and learn the progression towards leading outdoors. The session is structured to build skills step by step, so you won’t be pushed beyond your current ability.

### Will I get to lead climb during the day?

Yes, there will be opportunities to practise lead climbing in a controlled and supported environment. This allows you to apply new skills with guidance available throughout. Progression is managed carefully so you build confidence before moving onto more independent climbing.

### What equipment will I learn to use?

You’ll work with sport climbing equipment such as quickdraws, ropes and harness systems. Guidance is given on how to use everything correctly and safely. Understanding how to manage your equipment while climbing is a key part of the course, helping you become more independent.
