### What should I bring with me?

Please discuss at time of booking as will vary depending upon the type of ICC you are aiming to get.

### What is The International Certificate of Competence (ICC)?

The ICC is an internationally recognised certificate that proves your competence to operate a yacht or powerboat in foreign waters. It is commonly required when chartering a boat or using your own vessel in European countries and other international destinations.

### What does a direct assessment involve?

A direct assessment is a practical test of your sailing or powerboating skills, usually taking half a day. During the assessment, you'll need to demonstrate your ability to handle the vessel safely, navigate, and perform essential manoeuvres such as mooring and emergency drills. If you would like additional practice before the test, we recommend booking a full-day session, which includes time for practice.

### Where is the assessment held?

The ICC assessments and courses are conducted at Brighton Marina. This location provides access to a variety of sailing conditions, allowing you to demonstrate your competence in real-world scenarios. If you prefer, the assessment can also be done on your own boat, depending on availability and arrangements.

### How long is the ICC valid?

The ICC is valid for 5 years. After that, you can renew it by declaring your time on the water without needing to take a further test. If your sailing or powerboating experience is up-to-date, renewal is a straightforward process.

### Do I need to take a course before doing the assessment?

If you already have the necessary experience to sail or operate a powerboat at a level equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper, you do not need to take a full course. You can simply book a direct assessment to obtain your ICC. However, if you are not confident in your skills, we recommend taking a course or booking additional practice time before attempting the assessment.

### Are there any additional fees?

There is an additional fee of £45 to the RYA for processing the ICC application. If you are a member of the RYA, this fee is waived, and your application is free.

### What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my assessment?

Safety is always our top priority. If weather conditions are unsafe for sailing or powerboating (e.g., high winds or storms), we may need to reschedule your assessment or adjust the activities for the day. Your instructor will make the final decision based on the conditions, and we'll do our best to accommodate your schedule.

### Can I use my own boat?

Yes, you can choose to use your own boat for the ICC assessment, provided it meets the necessary safety standards and is suitable for the test. Please contact us in advance to discuss the details and ensure everything is prepared for your assessment.
