Course Breakdown

We will make the most of each day, with the course running from 9-5pm across three days. On the first day, you will likely climb with those on our Climbing Adventure Day, and the next two days will be on a 1:2 ratio, prepping you to take on some of Ken Wilson’s vividly described climbing spots, ticking them off your climbing bucket list.

Day One: Top Roping to Success

The day will be shared with our Climbing Adventure Day, offering a smooth transition into outdoor climbing by focusing on safety and equipment.

We will focus on converting our movement skills into the outdoor style whilst learning about the risks associated with outdoor climbing and how they are mitigated. We will also introduce the vast array of traditional climbing equipment and how it is used.

Day Two: First Crag Outing

Immerse yourself in the Lake District rock as we guide you through the basics of belaying a lead climber and seconding a traditional Multi-Pitch climb. We will choose an easy-to-access location to maximise your time on the rock.

We will introduce you to the processes involved in seconding a traditional Multi-Pitch Climb. On a 1:2 ratio, we will introduce the skills needed to belay a lead climber efficiently, from standing on the ground and on intermediate stances. Once this is mastered, you will be able to follow your climbing guide up the route whilst being belayed safely from above.

Day Three: The Classics

Take on the classic routes described in Ken Wilson’s book, applying all the skills acquired over the past two days.

With 15 routes to choose from, we will be able to select something together, suitable for any weather and skill level.

We will meet at 9am at our main climbing hub in Kendal which is just minutes away from the M6 or a short walk from Kendal Train Station.

Climbers should have at least 6 months of regular climbing experience to fully enjoy and participate in this experience.

Participants should be able to answer no to this question: Is the participant aware of any medical conditions or taking any medication that may affect their ability to take part in this session?

Frequently Asked Questions

Whilst the difficulty of terrain covered does not necessarily have to be high, a good background in physical climbing ability will help you get the most out of your time with the instructor. We are able to select routes to match most abilities, but all will involve ~6 hours of time in the hills with our instructor. We recommend this course for those who have climbed regularly for around 6 months as this will ensure the stamina required to be out climbing for three consecutive days.

The grades will be determined by ability, but the course will be designed to maximise technical input and skills rather than pushing to a particular grade.

Climbing on natural protection requires a large number of skills to be made relatively safe. The risk of protection failure can never be fully removed. We can, however, learn to qualify our judgements, plan our actions and match our abilities to the terrain in order to undertake climbing as safely as possible. At all times you will be under the supervision of a qualified and experienced climbing instructor who will help with all tasks being undertaken.

The weather can change quickly and so synthetic outdoor clothing is ideal as it dries quickly and retains thermal efficiency to some degree when wet. A lightweight waterproof jacket and a beanie-style hat are useful. Footwear should be robust in order to cope with some rough ground, approach style shoes are ideal.

Enough food for each day, including snacks and plenty to drink. A flask is always a welcome treat. Some sunscreen. A shoulder bag/rucksack to carry your things.

You should bring your own comfortable rock shoes and chalk bag, everything else can be provided by us. If you already have some equipment of your own feel free to use the things you are most familiar with.

Probably. A comfy shoe is better for spending more time on your feet.

We will aim to start each day at 9am and climb until 5pm, if weather for the weekend is mixed, we may have one longer day to maximise climbing before bad weather comes in.

We cannot offer any refund in the event of bad weather. We have a large selection of locations giving us the best chance of finding dry rock, in very bad weather an indoor training location will be used.

Unfortunately not. Dogs can get agitated and distract from activity, and livestock may be present.

Unfortunately not, our group size will be large enough and we cannot extend our care to non-participants.

We will meet at our climbing centre at 9am on the day first day of the course for introductions and to take care of any outstanding admin. This will also be an opportunity to arrange car sharing.

We are located in Kendal, just a few minutes off the M6 and a short walk from Kendal Train Station.

If this meeting arrangement does not work for you, please notify us following your booking and we can make alternative arrangements.

The course is priced at £690 for one participant, with the second priced at only £151. Climbing is a great experience to share, and it will also benefit you in terms of the cost. If you don’t have a climbing buddy, please put in your booking as an individual, and let us know you would like a buddy, and we will do our best to pair your up, although we cannot guarantee it.

Unfortunately, accommodation is not included. Our sessions are open to those who live locally, as well as those visiting the area.

The days run from 9-5pm so if you don’t live locally you may wish to make the most of being in the gorgeous Lake District. We don’t offer accommodation, but here are some ideas for you:

  • Camping – There are several campsites for vans/ tents and even glamping pods in and around Kendal.
  • Budget – There are hostels such as Kendal Hostel or the usual chains such as Travelodge and Premier Inn.
  • Beyond – There are a wide variety of B&B’s and self catering accommodation and hotels to suit.
  • Visit CumbriaCumbria Tourism or Visit Kendal websites are a good starting point to find yourself somewhere to stay nearby.
