## FAQs

### What level of fitness and experience do I need?

This expedition is rated as moderate. You should have a reasonable level of fitness and some prior canoeing experience. If you're new to canoeing or want to build confidence, we recommend attending a canoe training session in May before joining the trip.

### What is the daily schedule like?

Each day involves approximately 6 hours of paddling, with breaks for lunch, rest, and exploring the surroundings. Evenings are spent setting up camp, preparing meals, and relaxing at designated campsites along the route.

### What equipment is provided?

We provide canoes, paddles, and buoyancy aids as part of the canoe hire fee (£50 per canoe). You will need to bring your own clothing, camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, mat), and cooking gear. A detailed kit list will be sent upon booking.

### What wildlife might I see?

The Caledonian Canal is rich in wildlife. You might spot deer, otters, golden eagles, and many birds found on the water such as ducks, divers and kingfishers. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous (but elusive) Loch Ness Monster!

### What are the camping arrangements?

We camp at informal campsites along the route, which provide basic facilities. Participants are responsible for their own camping gear and food preparation, but your guide will provide assistance and advice as needed. As it is not possible to book the camping sites, we are not able to guarantee these will be available, in which case we will camp wild.

### What happens if the weather is bad?

Scottish weather can be unpredictable, with strong winds being the most common challenge. While we’ll do our best to complete the route, safety is our top priority, and adjustments may be made if conditions are unsuitable for paddling.

### How do I get to the meeting point?

The trip starts in Fort William and ends in Inverness. You’ll need to arrange your own transport to Fort William. Pick-up and drop-off at Inverness train station or airport can be arranged with prior notice.

### What should I bring?

Clothing: Waterproofs, warm layers, and quick-drying clothing suitable for paddling. Camping Gear: Tent, sleeping bag, mat, and cooking equipment. Food: Enough meals and snacks for the duration of the trip (5 days). We will send out a full kit list to participants A detailed kit list will be provided after booking.

### Is there any support during the trip?

Yes, your expedition leader, Stuart, will guide and support you throughout the trip. He’ll assist with paddling techniques, camping setups, and ensuring everyone’s safety.

### Can I share a canoe with someone?

Yes, canoes are tandem (two-person), so you'll either be paired with another participant or share with someone you’re travelling with.

### Are meals provided?

Meals are not provided. You’ll need to bring your own food and cooking equipment. We recommend lightweight, easy-to-prepare meals suitable for camping.

### What’s included in the cost?

The cost includes guiding by an experienced expedition leader, canoe and paddling equipment hire (if selected), and logistical support, such as pick-up/drop-off in Inverness.

### How many people are on the trip?

The group size is capped at 8 participants to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

### Is there an age limit?

All under-18s must be accompanied by a participating adult. If you are planning to join an expedition with someone under 18, please let us know in the comments when you book. That way, we can check that it will be suitable, or offer alternatives before you make payment. We have had young people join our expeditions in the past, and would love to make this work for everyone keen to join.

### I can’t make these dates. Will you be adding more?

Please do get in touch using the orange button below the calendar. We would love to make something happen for you, and can generally make bespoke arrangements or add additional dates.
