From Monday to Thursday, you’ll be guided across some of the most demanding and rewarding sections of the Black Cuillin Ridge. Your guide will focus on movement coaching, safe scrambling, rope work, and identifying the best lines across exposed terrain. Each day’s objectives are selected based on the weather and group goals, with a plan to tick off some of Skye’s most celebrated Munro summits including Sgùrr Alasdair, Sgùrr MhicChoinnich and Am Basteir. Evenings are spent in the comfort of our local guesthouse, where fresh homemade food and local produce fuel you for the following day. There’s time to relax by the fire, review progress, and enjoy the surroundings. The inclusive package covers accommodation, all meals, transport, guide fees and equipment. Transfers from Strathcarron station can also be arranged if you’re travelling by train. Trip Only Option: If you prefer flexibility over food and accommodation, the trip only option allows you to arrange your own base while joining the same guided mountain days. We’ll meet you each morning in Lochcarron, or pick you up en route to Skye from agreed points like Broadford or Kyleakin. This option is ideal for those camping, staying at the Applecross campsite, or using local B&Bs or hostels in Lochcarron or on Skye. ## FAQs

### How fit do I need to be for this trip?

You’ll need a high level of mountain fitness to fully enjoy and complete this experience. The Black Cuillin Ridge involves long, demanding days with significant ascent and descent, plus continuous movement over technical and exposed ground. It’s not a beginner hillwalk, and you should be confident spending full days in the mountains, carrying your kit, and navigating uneven terrain. We recommend being comfortable with 6–8 hour hill days and having a reasonable level of stamina before the trip. While there’s no need for rock climbing experience, a good base of fitness will allow you to focus more on learning movement skills and enjoying the ridge rather than simply enduring it.

### What makes the Black Cuillin different from other mountain ranges?

The Black Cuillin are much more technical than most Scottish mountain routes. The ridge is sharp and narrow in places, with lots of scrambling, short climbs, and abseils. The rock is generally volcanic gabbro, which gives excellent grip, but the exposure and complexity mean it requires guided support for most people attempting a traverse or summit. Unlike more rounded mainland Munros, the Cuillin demand movement confidence and attention to safety techniques such as rope work and foot placement. This is why guided trips are popular—it allows participants to access otherwise intimidating terrain safely and with more enjoyment.

### What is included in the Fully Inclusive option?

The Fully Inclusive option covers everything you’ll need from arrival to departure. You’ll stay at the Rock Villa Hotel in Lochcarron for 5 nights and enjoy locally prepared, homemade meals throughout the trip. It’s a comfortable base to relax and recover between your mountain days. All instruction, technical equipment, local transport, and packed lunches for the hills are provided. The only thing you’ll need to bring is your personal kit. We’ll handle the rest, including logistics to and from the Cuillin each day. It’s the easiest option for those who want a stress-free experience.

### Can I stay in my own accommodation and just join for the mountain days?

Yes, that’s exactly what the Trip Only option is for. You can choose your own accommodation in or around Lochcarron or on Skye and simply meet us each day for the guided activity. It offers more flexibility for those who want to self-cater, camp, or stay somewhere specific. We'll still include all instruction, technical kit, and transport during the trip. You’ll just need to be ready for pick-up at an arranged location, which we’ll confirm after booking. It’s a great option if you’ve got your own van, want to stay with friends, or prefer a campsite or hostel setup.

### Do I need any prior climbing or scrambling experience?

No formal climbing experience is required, but some scrambling confidence is very helpful. This trip focuses on learning movement skills such as footwork, balance, and rope safety, so a background in hillwalking or easier mountain routes will make the trip more enjoyable. We’ll teach you the essential skills during the week, including rope-assisted scrambling and movement over exposed sections. The instruction is progressive, so even if you haven’t used a rope before, you’ll build the skills steadily under close supervision.

### What equipment do I need to bring?

We provide all specialist equipment, including helmets, harnesses, and ropes. You’ll just need to bring your personal hill kit such as boots, waterproofs, warm layers, and a rucksack. A full kit list is sent after booking to help you prepare. If you’re unsure about what gear is suitable, we’re happy to advise. Good boots with solid grip and ankle support are essential, as the Cuillin terrain is steep and rocky. It’s also worth bringing a head torch, gloves, and some high-energy snacks for the ridge days.
