The BSUPA Level 1: Ready to Ride course is designed to introduce beginners to the fundamental skills and knowledge required for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). This entry-level course focuses on building confidence, safety awareness, and basic paddling techniques, ensuring that participants can enjoy SUP in a safe and effective manner.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to demonstrate these skills to the satisfaction of the instructor, ensuring they are ready to paddle independently and safely on flat water.

Here is a typical course structure:

  1. Introduction & Safety Briefing:
    • Course overview and objectives
    • Importance of safety equipment (life jackets, leashes)
    • Basic water safety rules and protocols
  2. Classroom Theory:
    • Understanding SUP equipment: types of boards, paddles, and leashes
    • Proper attire for different conditions
    • Basic paddling principles: grip, stance, and stroke mechanics
  3. Practical Session 1:
    • On Land:
      • Practicing stance and balance on a stationary board
      • Demonstrating paddle grip and basic strokes (forward, reverse, sweep)
    • On Water:
      • Safely entering and exiting the water
      • Practicing basic paddle strokes while kneeling
      • Transitioning from kneeling to standing and maintaining balance
  4. Practical Session 2:
    • On Water:
      • Refining paddle strokes and practicing turns (pivot, sweep)
      • Paddling in different conditions and dealing with light wind
      • Introduction to self-rescue techniques (falling safely, re-mounting the board)
      • Improving overall balance and control on the board
  5. Review & Debrief:
    • Recap of key learning points and skills
    • Individual feedback from the instructor
    • Q&A session for participants
    • Presentation of the BSUPA Level 1: Ready to Ride certificate
    • Guidance on next steps and further SUP progression

The course is generally suitable for individuals aged 8 and above. Younger participants may need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, depending on the training center’s policies.

Participants will learn the basics of stand-up paddleboarding, including:

  • Understanding SUP equipment
  • Basic paddle strokes and turns
  • Safe entry and exit from the water
  • Balancing and standing on the board
  • Self-rescue techniques
  • Fundamental safety protocols

Not typically, all necessary equipment, including boards, paddles, and life jackets, is usually provided by the training centre. However, if you have your own equipment, you are often welcome to bring it.
